The very first thing that must be understood is that we are born sinners. In the Bible, it says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).” This means that every human on this planet, no matter how good you think you are or another person is, has sinned at some point. This includes, but most definitely not limited to, using God’s name as a curse word, lying, stealing, lust, greed, idolatry, hatred, drunkenness, and pride. In fact 1 John 1:8 says that “if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”
So what’s the big deal? Sin can’t be that bad can it? Well actually it is, and here’s why. Sin against the one true God who is eternal, holy, righteous and pure results in us having to pay the penalty. How long does it take to pay the penalty? The problem is that sin against an eternal God follows an eternal punishment. That is Hell. We can never pay the penalty fully. Not even remotely close. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 says we “…will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord…”
Thankfully God the Father loves us so much that He did something about it! God knew that we could not save ourselves, so He sent His one and only Son Jesus to come down to earth as a man. As a man Jesus lived the holy, righteous life that we ourselves could not. He did not sin even once. Not only that, but He suffered and died by crucifixion on the cross to pay for our sins; and on the third day of being dead, was raised to life by God. This not only proved that Jesus is God (John 1:1), but also that He is capable of defeating sin and death! As God, Jesus’ death was infinite in worth and therefore sufficient to pay for the sins of everyone (1 John 2:2).
Imagine for a moment you are guilty of a completely heinous crime and are before a judge in a court of law. The judge pronounces you guilty, and rightly so. You are sentenced to death by lethal injection. Then comes along someone who you do not know and they say they will pay the penalty for your crime if only you accept. What do you say? If you say no, then you will be sent to die. If you say yes then the judges’ wrath will be placed on the stranger and you will be set free and live. This is what Jesus did for us! God the Father’s holy wrath was placed on God the Son, and for all those who say yes will receive His perfect righteousness on them (2 Corinthians 5:21) and receive His Holy Spirit inside them. In John 3:16 it says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” This means we can enter Heaven to spend eternity with someone who loves us enough to save us, instead of eternal torment and suffering in Hell. This is called GRACE! It was nothing we did to deserve such an offer.
So how exactly does one become a Christian?
It is actually much simpler than most expect. Basically, the Bible says in Romans 10:9 that “if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” It doesn’t get much simpler. You don’t have to do anything to earn salvation because it is not by your works that you enter Heaven, but by God’s. It is by His righteousness alone by which you are saved (John 14:6; Ephesians 2:8-9). This sure takes the pressure off of us relying on our own imaginary strength when we can just rest in Jesus’ (Psalm 55:22). We can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by confessing that we are sinners and by putting our faith and trust in Him. If we truly believe that God saved us from our sins and that His death and resurrection is sufficient to pay for all those sins, then we become what is known as a Christian. An adopted child of God. In the words of Jesus Himself “…I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
If you want to accept Jesus into your heart today, but don’t know the words to say, just say this prayer:
“Father I am truly sorry. I am a sinner. I believe that your Son Jesus’ death on the cross, and His resurrection on the third day, is sufficient to pay for all my sins; the past, present, and future. Jesus, I ask that You come into my life and be my Lord and Saviour. Father, please send your Holy Spirit to come dwell in me so that I can obey You and be in step with Your perfect will. In Jesus’ holy name I pray this. Amen.”
Remember that simply repeating this prayer will not save you. You must believe it in your heart. Empty words will never save you for it is only Jesus who can. If you said this prayer and meant it, then welcome to God’s family! Here is a list of some things that will help you deepen your relationship with God, but keep in mind that it’s not your good deeds like going to church that saves you; it is only Jesus and His righteousness on you at the point of believing in Him that does. We obey God’s commands because of our love for Him.
